If we're looking for a refreshing dessert that is simple, fruity, and perfect for warm weather, Orange Granita is an excellent choice. Granita is a traditional frozen dessert from Italy with a light, fluffy texture made of tiny ice crystals.
Unlike creamy frozen desserts, it feels fresh and clean on the palate while highlighting the natural sweetness and bright flavor of oranges.
Best of all, we only need three everyday ingredients, and the recipe is easy enough for beginners. In about two hours, we can enjoy a homemade dessert that looks beautiful and tastes wonderfully refreshing.

Ingredients We Need

This recipe makes about 2 servings.
Ingredients:
- 2 medium fresh oranges (about 450-500 g)
- 100 ml water
- 30 g granulated sugar
Optional for serving:
- 1/2 teaspoon grated orange zest
- A few small orange pieces
- Fresh mint leaves
Choose ripe, juicy oranges because they naturally provide more sweetness and a richer citrus aroma.

Step 1: Prepare The Oranges

1. Wash the oranges thoroughly and dry them. Peel away the skin and remove as much of the white pith as possible to keep the flavor bright. Separate the oranges into segments, remove every seed, and cut the segments into small pieces about 2 cm wide.
2. If you'd like extra citrus fragrance, grate about half a teaspoon of orange zest before peeling the fruit and save it for decorating the finished dessert.

Step 2: Blend The Mixture

1. Place the orange pieces into a blender. Add 100 ml water and 30 g sugar.
2. Blend everything for 20-30 seconds until the mixture becomes smooth and the sugar dissolves completely. The result should be a bright orange liquid with a smooth consistency.
3. If a blender isn't available, squeeze the juice from both oranges into a bowl, add the water and sugar, and stir for about 2-3 minutes until the sugar has fully dissolved.

Step 3: Freeze The Mixture

1. Pour the mixture into a shallow freezer-safe container, preferably around 20 × 15 cm. A shallow container helps the mixture freeze more evenly and speeds up the process.
2. Cover the container with a lid and place it in the freezer for 30 minutes.
3. When you check it, the edges and bottom should be frozen while the center remains soft.

Step 4: Scrape The Ice Crystals

1. Take the container from the freezer and use a fork to gently scrape the frozen edges toward the center. Break the frozen sections into small crystals until the entire mixture becomes fluffy.
2. This scraping step usually takes 2-3 minutes.
3. Return the container to the freezer for another 30 minutes.
4. Repeat the same freezing and scraping process two more times. Each round creates smaller ice crystals, giving the granita its signature light, snowy texture instead of becoming one solid block.
5. If you have a hand blender, you can blend the partially frozen mixture for about 10 seconds during each round instead of using a fork.

Step 5: Serve And Enjoy

1. After the third scraping, the granita should be filled with soft, sparkling ice crystals that are easy to scoop.
2. Spoon the granita into chilled serving bowls or glasses. Sprinkle a little orange zest over the top and add a few fresh orange pieces for extra color and flavor. Fresh mint leaves also make a beautiful finishing touch.
3. Serve immediately while the texture is loose and fluffy. Every spoonful delivers cool citrus flavor that melts gently in the mouth.

Helpful Tips

- Use ripe oranges. Fresh, juicy fruit creates the brightest flavor.
- Choose a shallow container. A thin layer freezes faster and is easier to scrape.
- Don't skip the scraping. Scraping every 30 minutes creates the classic granita texture.
- Make a small batch. Granita tastes best shortly after it's ready. If frozen for many hours, it becomes quite firm. Simply let it sit for 5-10 minutes before scraping again.
- Try different fruits. This recipe also works well with peaches, mangoes, blueberries, raspberries, or watermelon using the same method.

A Refreshing Homemade Dessert

Orange Granita shows us that a delicious homemade dessert doesn't need complicated ingredients or special equipment. With just fresh oranges, water, sugar, and a little patience, we can create a bright, refreshing treat that is full of natural fruit flavor. The repeated scraping transforms the mixture into delicate ice crystals that make every bite light and enjoyable.
